Russ knew that he would be a drummer from the time he was three years old, when he received a toy drum kit for Christmas. He enrolled in drum lessons at age eight, and studied for fifteen years under the direction of several acclaimed local drummers. He has also taught drum lessons himself both privately and through several music studios.

Obviously, he is a huge student and admirer to RUSH drummer Neil Peart. When playing RUSH covers, he learns every fill to the exact tom. He attribues his virtuosity and incredible ear to years of great teaching and his love for RUSH. He is very proud to pay tribute to his idol, Neil Peart.

While not playing with Coldfire, Russ enjoys outdoor recreation including snowmobiling, hunting, camping and fishing.
